Recipes from Europe

Herring Under A Fur Coat - also known as Shuba - is a beautiful layered salad with pickled herring. This appetizer is typically enjoyed for New Years!

What You'll Need

Beetroot Carrots & Potatoes Pickled Herring Onion Mayo Apple Cider Vinegar Salt & Sugar Water

First, chop the onion and place it in a bowl with water, apple cider vinegar, salt, and sugar to remove some bitterness. Leave for 15 minutes.

Next, chop the herring fillets and de-bone if necessary. In a single-size metal mold or large bowl, place the herring down in one layer.

Now, strain the onions and place them on top of the herring. Spread mayonnaise on top.

Grate the boiled potatoes and place them on top of the mayo. Spread this potato layer with more mayo.

Next add the cooked and grated carrots as the next layer. Spread this layer with more mayo.

Lastly, add the grated beets. Spread this layer with mayo as well. Then place the salad in the fridge for at least one hour.

You can leave the Shuba salad in the fridge until the next day for best results. Enjoy this colorful salad as an appetizer!
