Melomakarona are a classic Greek Christmas cookie. Shaped like an oval and dipped in a honey syrup, they are very popular and easy to make.

What You'll Need

Flour & Baking powder Orange juice & Water Brandy or cognac Orange Zest & Walnuts Baking soda Olive & Vegetable oil Cinnamon & Nutmeg Ground cloves & Honey Vanilla extract

First, make the syrup. Combine the water, sugar, cinnamon stick, sliced orange and the whole cloves. Boil for 4-5 minutes.

Then remove the pot from heat and stir in the honey. Allow to cool to room temperature.

Mix orange juice and baking soda in a small bowl and let it bubble. Then then add the oil, sugar, water, brandy, honey, orange zest, vanilla extract, and spices.

Mix flour and baking power in a bowl. Then add the wet ingredients and knead with your hands until the dough is smooth. Also, preheat the oven to 350°F.

Scoop dough and shape into ovals using your palms. Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and pierce with a fork.

Bake the cookies at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 20 minutes. Once done, remove and dip in the syrup.

Allow the cookies to sit in the syrup for 20-30 seconds, then place them on a cooling rack. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts.

Allow the cookies to cool, then enjoy! They will last for a few weeks in a cookie tin.
