Lightly sweet and perfectly fried, these Ukrainian cookies - known as Verguny - resemble angel wings and are popular around the Holidays!
Buttermilk All-purpose Flour Brown Sugar Baking Soda Vegetable Oil Egg Salt Powdered Sugar
First, add the buttermilk and the egg to a medium-sized mixing bowl. Whisk to combine.
Next, add the brown sugar, vegetable oil, baking soda, and salt, and mix it together well.
Add the flour gradually and knead the dough with the spiral dough hooks of your electric until it is soft and not sticky.
Once kneaded, wrap the dough in plastic wrap and place it in the fridge for 30 minutes.
Sprinkle the work surface with flour. Then roll out some of the dough to about 1/8 inch thick and cut it into diamonds.
Next, cut a slit in the middle and thread the top point through the middle. Repeat for all of the dough you have.
Fry the dough in oil heated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 4-5 minutes or until golden brown on the outside. Fry in batches.
Remove the verguny from the oil and place on a plate lined with paper towel. Then sprinkle with powdered sugar and enjoy!
