Red Cabbage Onions & Apples Bacon Grease Water & Apple Juice Red Wine Vinegar Sugar & Salt Cloves & Bay Leaf Black Pepper
First, remove the outer leaves and core and then thinly slice the red cabbage into strips.
Next, peel and finely chop the onions. Also peel the apples and cut them into small pieces.
In a large pot, add the bacon grease and fry the onions and the apples for about 5 minutes until soft. Stir regularly.
Add the cabbage and red wine vinegar - and cook for a couple of minutes. Then add the water, apple juice, sugar, salt, cloves and bay leaf to the pot.
Give everything a stir, then simmer over low heat for 45-60 minutes until soft. Stir occasionally and add more water if needed.
The cooking time can vary depending on the thickness of the cabbage and your personal personal preference.
Once done, remove the cloves and bay leaf and add salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy the red cabbage as a side dish!
